On Picking Fruit

It's a hilarious, sexy, heartfelt and sometimes even shocking novel about a gay man and his quest to find a partner which is challenged by his irreverent mother, incorrigible best friend and an unethical shrink.

Curtis Jenkins has trouble picking fruit. This gay NYC middle-aged hottie chooses too quickly and always goes for what looks good on the outside. But more often than not it turns out to be tasteless, bruised or even rotten on the inside. Consequently, this is how he's picked the men in his life...or they've picked him.

But it's a bizarre yet comical trip to the hospital that's about to change all that for him. After a suicide attempt with a bottle of Beano induced by a psychotropic HIV drug, Curtis emerges from a coma only to find himself face to face with his always unpredictable mother, Mrs. J. And flying in from the coast to supposedly offer comfort is his larger than life best friend, Quinn.

Fortunately, Curtis survives. Unfortunately, upon discharge he must see a psychiatrist. Enter Dr. Magda Tunick. Older than dirt and just as gritty, her non-conventional approach to therapy borders on malpractice. She and Curtis discover that what's missing in his life is not a man, but the man. So, she sends him out into NYC on a wild goose chase to find a partner.

Curtis meets men, lots of men! Men of all shapes, sizes, ages and careers. From drag queens and hustlers to actors and lawyers. Some encounters are sexy, erotic, touching and romantic. Others are hilarious, quirky, frightening and even shocking.

While cheering Curtis on, Mrs. J. uses the Tunick Technique for finding gay men and poof...she ends up in love herself! And to Curtis' dismay, Quinn lands himself a stud named Colt. And yes he's hung like one, too.

And although it's Curtis' neurotic, self-deprecating sense of humor that enables him to survive one comedy date from hell after another, along the journey he also grows, evolves and becomes a more conscious man.

So, sit back, share a huge laugh and a tear and find out if Curtis collides into Mr. Right or even...Mr. Pretty Close.
